-make a model sheet and write notes. Seriously. All my main OCs have model sheets, Vern actually has 3 for a multitude of reasons. When I finish talking I can upload some of the notes and drawings I make for Vern so his design stays as consistent as I can
-I also make the designs fit with their personality, something you can see with characters like SU to make them more distinct. Vern was the toughest because All Walkers share the same body type, but I worked around it by giving him some muscle and sturdy legs. They aren’t obvious in sketches bc I’m doodling quickly.
Another example would be how Indigo is a beloved but “off” dragon due to his more non-aggressive nature so he has a lot of gentle curves on his body.
-If you want to make a big detailed adventure comic, make an outline for it. Don’t just have an idea in your head and go with it bc I guarantee you that you won’t know how to pace yourself. Also dont immediately jump into it, start off with a starter comic. Maybe something comedy oriented or at least not heavy on continuation, that way you can learn about your own work progress
-please write down every interesting idea you have I can’t stress that enough. You may have an interesting idea in the future like a plot twist or a character death, but you’ll need to write that shit down somewhere because I promise you that you won’t remember
-keep a file of references and inspiration. I have a file with about 50 images of jungles, homes, beaches, clothes, animals and cities for reference and inspiration. A lot of webcomic artists actually do this as it makes the design process a lot more grounded and easier.
-Don’t post your comic on tumblr. Seriously. I went to a comic class earlier and I’ve read a lot of posts about it, unless you’re INSANELY popular, your comic is going to flop. The only way you can get the word around is if you promo it a shitton and again if you aren’t that popular you’d be lucky as all hell to get them slightest of attention.
Places like Taptastic and Smackjeeves are a lot more friendly to up and coming webcomic creators because they have areas where you can see new comics and find something that interests you. Although I would advise not using the former as there’s some controversy with it.
